Daily Photos: Day 159

Saturday, June 7th

As soon as the music starts Izzie lights up and begins "singing." This consists mostly of saying "Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah!" and flapping her arms enthusiastically. Since we arrived she has been babbling the syllables mama and baba, but we haven't gotten her to say dada yet. When she sings, though, it's always "Ah."

Izzie's favourite rhythm instrument is this one... We bought it at a market in Seattle just after we returned from Korea. She can stick pretty close to the beat and has also started clapping.

We spotted a sign advertising an event at the fire hall which included a bouncy castle and decided the boys needed to experience that.

It was only a quarter (hard to believe!) and they had a great time! Ben and Sam started out by themselves (so they wouldn't get crushed by larger kids) and they basically got to jump as long as they wanted, or until the older kids came back. After while 2 younger girls joined them. Ben and Sam bonked heads once, but it was soon forgotten. The boys also went fishing with a magnet on a string and won some candy, and did a cakewalk in which Ben's number was drawn. He got to pick out a cake and he was very proud of it. He picked a cake with chocolate icing and multi-coloured sprinkles and held it on his lap all the way home in the car. It was a warm day and by the time we got home the icing had melted and swallowed up the sprinkles. Ben began asking where they had gone, but the crisis was diverted when Grandma announced that she had some sprinkles in her cupboard.

After dinner Ben wanted to sit in Izzie's chair to eat his cake, and he requested that we sing "Happy to You." (Happy Birthday to You) He had sung this while playing with Grandma, and also at my aunt's house for her 50th birthday, so he knew it was a song for people with cakes... The boys dug right in, but nobody else went near it.

Sam managed to pick up his entire piece of cake with his fork!

Later that night we picked up Chris. Sam fell asleep shortly after getting in the car but Ben managed to stay awake all the way to the airport. Mom, Julee and Ben went in to meet Chris while I stayed in the car to feed Izzie and let Sam sleep. Inside, Grandma let Ben put a quarter in the candy machine and he refused to use the railing on the way down the stairs because he wanted to keep his hand in his pocket to protect the candy! All three children were sleeping by the time we arrived home.

It was a very busy day, but a very good one!

What a happy bunch of children. Ben and his cake -- what a good story!

So Grandma Val gave Ben a quarter for the vending machine. Mmmm. . . she's setting a tradition there for Grandma Ann to follow. But that's what grandmothers are for--to treat their grandchildren.

Exactly - especially when they live so far away.
