Daily Photos: Day 366

Wednesday, December 31st
Grandma Val's parcel finally made it today... not in time for Christmas although it was mailed with plenty of time to spare. We were just about to send out a search party. Even though Christmas was past I wanted to decorate our tree. (Yes, it's a tree made out of sticks. I find that appropriate, don't you?) The manger scene was slightly smushed but all the ornaments survived.
I didn't want to start the new year behind so I've been on a posting frenzy tonight. I'm not going to hold myself to a post for every day of the year in 2009, but I will aim for 4 or 5 posts a week. Thank you for sharing the year with us! See you in 2009! Wishing you all many blessings in the new year.

In Colin's family it is tradition to receive a new toothbrush in the Christmas stocking. Ben and Izzie each got a toothbrush shaped like a Crayola marker. It has a suction cup on the end that makes it much more interesting than a regular toothbrush.

Here Grandpa, I moistened it for you!

Sunday, December 28th

We had some beautiful weather while Grandma and Grandpa were here and we took advantage of it by going to the park. I say we, but actually I didn't make nearly as many trips to the park (or school playground) as Grandma, bless her heart!

You might remember that Ben had taken up swinging on his stomach this summer. He did that for a while.

And of course someone else watched him and wanted to do it too.

Then he surprised me by asking to sit on the swing... and he didn't get off after one tiny push! He kept asking Grandma for more and more pushes.

She loves to swing, but she's not easy to hold on to.

Katie had to fly home today but we got a picture of everyone together first.

Friday, December 26th

As usual, a lot of stories were read. Izzie only sits still for two pages or 3 seconds - whichever takes less time.

One evening after Grandma had read a thousand stories to Ben she said she was finished reading but suggested he could ask somebody else. So Ben went over to Grandpa and asked, "Grandpa, can Grandma read some more stories to me?"

Thursday, December 25th
It didn't take Ben and Izzie long to catch on to the present opening. We opened stockings in the morning and waited until Grandpa arrived in the afternoon to open other presents.

Izzie got a purse with various accessories from Aunt Katie. Here she is applying some lipstick to her hair.

Ben flying his Diego rescue helicopter.

Colin made chicken cordon bleu for Christmas dinner and creme brulee for dessert! Yum.

Fun in the tub with Katie and the bath penguins.

If not her thumb, then whatever else is handy.

Awwwww.... Did I mention that Katie taught Izzie how to kiss? She's trying to pucker in this picture.

Tuesday, December 23rd
Grandma and Grandpa arrived today! Izzie chose this outfit herself - as I tried to fold laundry she kept bringing me items and indicating that she wanted to wear them. So I obliged.

I guess we know who Izzie gets her fashion sense from. (From whom Izzie gets her fashion sense?)

Izzie makes sure Grandma is in style.

Thursday, December 18th

Ben loves his lobster shirt from Grandma Val. He loves it so much that sometimes he wears it to bed underneath his pajamas. He was happy to pose for a picture but kept giving me his fake smile so I told him to think about his birthday cake. He must have followed my directions because his eyes moved up and to the right indicating that he was visually remembering something.

But he did smile... very enthusiastically!

Hey Grandma, check out this shirt!

Of course Izzie wanted to be involved too.

Daily Photos: Day 352

Wednesday, December 17th
We went to a birthday party for one of Ben's friends this evening and brought home a souvenir from inside the pirate pinata. Doesn't Ben make a great nerd?

When the candy started hitting the floor Izzie practically threw herself out of my arms. Ben was a little shy about diving into the fray but Izzie had no such qualms. (Actually, these kids were very low-key: it's generally a recipe for disaster when you get lots of small children together, load them up on sugar, blindfold and give one a bat and then instruct that child to beat his/her way to more sugar. I'm pretty sure that's how wars get started.) At one point in the evening as I was prying a foil covered peanut butter cup from each of Izzie's hands I realized she already had one in her mouth, foil and all. It was a party, so yes, I did let her eat some - and she devoured more than her fair share of my piece of cake... and then Ben's - I just didn't want her to melt them into a gooey mess in her hands.

Ben's Third Year Video link

I finally finished making Ben's video with pictures from his third year. I posted it here (as if I had actually posted it on his birthday) so I would know where to find it later. And if anyone knows of a program similar to MovieMaker that doesn't lock up every 15 seconds, please send me an email!

Izzie is fearless when it comes to water. At the first swimming pool we went to in Vancouver she was the only one who would go down the slide or crawl through the tunnel. In the bathtub she gamely takes her splashes from Ben and doesn't even really get bothered when he tries to pour water on her head.

Daily Photos: Day 343

Monday, December 8th

Izzie wants so desperately to do everything that Ben can do. She doesn't want to sit in the highchair anymore, she'd rather sit in a regular chair. She wants to try and eat with a fork and a spoon. She wants to climb up on the stool and wash her hands whenever Ben uses the toilet. She doesn't want to eat dry cereal, she would rather have cereal with milk on it. She wants to play with blocks and puzzles just like Ben does... only with more chewing on the pieces.

Daily Photos: Day 342

Sunday, December 7th

Who dares to approach my crib?

Oh, you again... with the camera.

I asked Ben to make Izzie laugh and he grabbed her hands.

She thought it was hilarious. This is generally what she thinks about Ben, unless he's trying to get something away from her. Then she will throw herself down on the floor on top of it so he can't grab it, and scream at the top of her lungs. She's already learned that those kinds of sounds get attention very quickly, and often lead to Ben having to return what he's taken. I feel like she's at the stage Ben was at when Izzie started crawling and he realized she could get his toys. If she came within three feet he would start to yell, (or scream, depending on his mood) "No Izzie, no!" Then we would look over... and she'd still be way across the room, not even close to grabbing anything. It was like a pre-emptive panic attack; if I panic now, while she's still far away, maybe she'll turn back. These days if Ben looks too closely at anything she's holding she assumes he's going to (try to) take it...but often rightly so.

Daily Photos: Day 341

Saturday, December 6th
Izzie doesn't miss a thing. Usually she is in bed before Ben, but one night she witnessed him standing on the stool to brush his teeth. Now she has to stand on the stool to brush her teeth too!
