Daily Photos: Day 183

Monday, June 30th

Strawberries are in season so we made some crepes and whipped cream and gave the beaters to Ben and Izzie to lick.

It took a while to convince Ben that this was an experience he would enjoy.

Izzie dived right in, and after watching her for a few seconds Ben decided it must be safe.

Later we went to a provincial park with lots of walking trails and historic sites.

Ben sat on a cannon... and threw rocks into the water.

Izzie had to amuse herself within the confines of the stroller.

Sunday, June 29th

Due to Grandma's oversight, Izzie is starting a new fashion trend.

Daily Photos: Day 181

Saturday, June 28th

We spent much of the day doing yardwork. Even Ben helped by sweeping the stones leading to the front door.

Izzie has taken to eating with one foot up in the air - a behaviour we try to discourage Ben from copying.

Daily Photos: Day 178

Wednesday, June 25th

Izzie is so sweet when she waves: she always smiles, and the person she is waving to can't help but smile back. The other night she was fussing and I went and picked her up. When she saw Grandpa in the hall her fussing changed to smiles and she waved bye-bye with both hands!

I love this age - it's the age when Ben really turned on the charm and started flirting - and Izzie is turning out to be quite the charmer too.

Fun with eyes...

Daily Photos; Day 176

Monday, June 23rd

Izzie needed a little airing out so we stripped her down and took her outside. Even just on the back deck you can't take your eyes off her for an instant or she is trying to eat a leaf/plant/stick/bug or grabbing the bowl of soap bubbles.

Grandma's poor windows!

Daily Photos: Day 175

Sunday, June 22nd

After stuffing a chicken with lemon, garlic and herbs we roasted it on the barbecue using this contraption. (Yes, with the 7-up inside of it.)

Izzie is really enjoying eating solid foods. When we left she was mainly eating sweet potato, carrots, Cheerios and banana, but she will now eat whatever she can get her hands on - and she tries to grab everything. If it is not within reach or the food isn't coming fast enough she will let you know in no uncertain terms. (Which is to say that she shrieks!) In fact, if she is getting sweet potato and carrot and sees that you are having something more exciting, she will also let you know the situation is unacceptable. Her current favourite is chicken soup - little bits of chicken, spiral noodles and soft carrots and celery. She is a very noisy eater and makes lots of slurping and smacking sounds. In this picture she was sampling some pieces of strawberries, and although it looks like she enjoyed them, I seem to remember her not really liking them. She did have a lot of fun picking them up, putting them in her mouth, and then spitting them out and smearing them all over. The strangest thing she has tried and liked so far is a dill pickle. We gave her a spear thinking it would be funny to see her face when she tried it, and to our surprise she cleaned the whole inside off without batting an eye! Perhaps we will have to continue a tradition that my parents started when my sisters and I were young and loved dill pickles - a jar in our stockings at Christmas!

Daily Photos: Day 174

Saturday, June 21st

We had a big thunderstorm and lost power for a couple of hours, so Grandma and Grandpa dug out some Coleman lamps.

It's almost as hypnotic as gazing into the dying embers of a fire. (We did light the wood stove later that evening... June 21st and still building fires!)

Daily Photos: Day 173

Friday, June 20th

Mom and I decided to take the kids to the beach. They both fell asleep on the way there so we sat in the car and chatted while they continued sleeping.

When Izzie woke up I fed her and she was in a grand mood, pleased as punch to mess around with Ben's sunglasses.

I went for a walk on the beach and nearly froze while verifying that it was cold, foggy, and there was nothing to see except a lot of small clear blobs which turned out to be baby jellyfish. (I think...)

Since Ben slept through the cold grey beach he had to settle for a cozy good-night story with Grandma.

Daily Photos: Day 172

Thursday, June 19th

Izzie gets a cuddle in her towel after her bath. She spends her time in the tub knocking all the shampoo bottles off the shelf, standing up and sitting down, splashing herself while squealing excitedly, and blinking when she gets herself in the eyes.

Check out the lashes!

Daily Photos: Day 171

Wednesday, June 18th

Izzie has learned a new skill - climbing up stairs! She is quite happy to practice it several times a day and is going to be disappointed when we return home and only has one small step to go up. (Don't worry, Grandpa is just out of sight ready to catch her.)

Ben and Grandma enjoy a late night smash-up derby.

Tuesday, June 17th

More monkey see, monkey do...

Izzie was chewing on her finger first.

When Ben saw me with the camera he thought he'd join in.

Then Izzie thought it'd be fun to see what she could smear on the lens!

Daily Photos: Day 169

Monday, June 16th

Somebody keeps parking some diggers at the trail head beside my parents' house, so we decided to check them out and take a picture.

Izzie was hamming it up at the window so I ran outside to take a picture.

I think this one is my favourite!

Daily Photos: Day 168

Sunday, June 15th

Sunday morning Izzie was up early so my mom took her and let me sleep in a bit. When I got up I discovered Mom had gotten her back to sleep all snuggled up on the floor!

With Chris, Julee and Sam gone the days are not as exciting as they used to be, so it was back to the lake to throw rocks again.

We discovered that you can use the rocks to write with.

Daily Photos: Day 167

Saturday, June 14th

We took in a farmer's market held in an old brewery. It was so crowded we had to split up in order to get around. It's just too hard to keep a large group together in that kind of a situation. Afterward we took a walk along the water.

Outside one of the museums was a model boat/playgound for children to play on.

They crawled and climbed and didn't want to leave to continue our walk.

Fortunately some beaver tails cheered them right up. (The one on the left is maple butter, the ones on the right are cinnamon sugar.) We sat on a bench and ate while listening to some buskers playing the fiddle. Izzie (of whom I didn't take any pictures) attracted a surprising amount of attention. I guess she's just that cute.

Yum!
We had to say good-bye to Chris, Julee and Sam and it was sad to see them leave. The exciting part is that now Ben actually knows who Sam is, and remembers.

Daily Photos: Day 166

Friday, June 13th

We visited a farm where the children could pet and feed some animals. Ben and Sam were thoroughly prepared, after all the verses of Old MacDonald we had sung during our 24 hours of driving to Canada.

There were two beautiful horses.

Ben fed the goats. Sam didn't want to get too close to them...

which was reasonable, considering how pushy they were!

Julee and the kids.

There was also a playground with this funny mural. Chris was as excited about investigating an old tractor as the children were about using the playground equipment.

After lunch we drove to Peggy's Cove. This sign greeted us at the lighthouse.

We had to abort our trek across the rocks in favour of a path more travelled.

Around the lighthouse it was even windier than down on the rocks. We snapped a few pictures and then ran away.

Deceptively serene looking, isn't it?
